Vertical Sliding Window Detail
Vertical sliding windows typically have two sashes one of which slides towards the bottom end or the top end of the window frame for ventilation purposes. Simply put, a vertical sliding window contains one or more panels that move vertically. The traditional material for such windows is wood. Although today other materials can also be used for manufacturing vertical sliding windows such as aluminum, PVC etc.
The main difference between the vertical sliding sash windows and guillotine windows is the operation. Sash windows usually have a piece of lock or stabilizer for the sash that is operable, to fix it to stay opened or closed. On the other hand, guillotine windows generally operate with a motor that carries the weight of the panels. Another difference is the maximum size of these two vertical moving window types. With today’s technology vertical guillotine window systems can cover quite large spans on a façade as though the whole wall becomes operable, whereas vertical sliding sash windows are limited in that sense.
What kind of details do vertical sliding windows have?
Vertical sliding windows can vary in detail depending on the material. A wooden vertical sash window requires more traditional installation techniques. The inner surfaces of the opening are cladded with the frame which is called the jambs. The jamb piece is generally L-shaped to cover the parts where the frame meets the wall. Looking from across on the top, bottom, right and left sides of the opening generally an 8 centimeters strip is seen around the opening.
The sill is the bottom piece that holds the sashes on. For wooden frame windows the sill also can be made of wood. However for aluminum or PVC window systems the sill can also be marble or granite or that kind of natural stone.
For each case the insulation around the corners and the parts where the window is touching the wall is very important. Wooden windows tend to behave problematically when exposed to water whereas aluminum is generally a safer choice, especially in terms of insulation values and water permeability.
PVC is generally a cheaper option which also provides practical features although most of the times lacks the pleasant appearance or the aesthetics. Vertical sliding window systems require less space when in action compared to standard sash windows however it can be said that the guillotine window provides everything the sliding sash type does and adds more.
